The Logic combi range has commonly been available in 24kW, 30kW and 35kW outputs. This gives homeowners a few options depending on the size of the home and the hot water demand.

The Logic Plus and Logic Max models usually sit higher in the range. The Logic Max comes with an Ideal system filter and, according to Ideal, includes a 10-year parts and labour warranty when installed and registered correctly.

What is good about the Ideal Logic combi boiler?

The Ideal Logic has some clear strengths.

It is compact, so it fits well in many kitchen cupboards. It is also fairly light compared with some other boilers, which makes it easier to install.

From an installer’s point of view, it is a straightforward boiler to work on. Parts are widely available, and most heating engineers will be familiar with the range.

Ideal describes the Logic range as over 90% efficient. The Logic Plus has also received Quiet Mark and Good Housekeeping recognition.

The main benefit of the Logic is that it sits in a sensible middle ground. It is not the most premium boiler on the market, but it is not one I would put at the bottom either.

Why installers often like working on Ideal Logic boilers

One thing I do like about the Logic is that it is generally nice to service.

The layout is simple enough, and access is reasonable. The burner seal also does not need changing every single time the burner is removed, which means there is little reason to skip proper inspection and cleaning during a service.

A good service on an Ideal Logic should include more than a quick check with a flue gas analyser.

  • Inspecting and cleaning the main heat exchanger where needed
  • Cleaning the condensate trap
  • Inspecting the burner

A rushed service can miss problems. That is true with any boiler, but it matters with the Logic because poor servicing can make some common issues worse.

Common Ideal Logic boiler problems

This is where we need to be fair.

Some Ideal Logic boilers have issues. But some of the problems people blame on the boiler can also come from poor installation, dirty system water, lack of servicing or general age.

Here are the common issues I see.

1. Rumbling noises

Ideal Logic boilers are known by some engineers for rumbling noises.

This can happen for a few reasons, including:

  • A dirty main heat exchanger
  • Poor servicing
  • Incorrect combustion setup

  • Gas valve problems
  • Dirty heating system water

Sometimes the rumbling can be improved with a proper service and clean. In other cases, it can be harder to cure fully.

This does not mean every Ideal Logic boiler will rumble. Many run quietly. But it is an issue that engineers do come across.

2. Pressure loss

Pressure loss is another common issue as Logic boilers get older.

4. Flow turbine problems

The flow turbine tells the boiler when a hot tap has been opened.

On some Logic boilers, replacing the flow turbine could become awkward. In some cases, the turbine could snap and leave part of it stuck inside the manifold.

When that happens, what should be a smaller repair can become more involved. Sometimes the full manifold may need replacing.

5. Condensate sump leaks

Condensate sump leaks are another known issue.

The condensate water inside a boiler is acidic, so you do not want it leaking inside the case.

The difficult part is that replacing the sump properly can involve removing the main heat exchanger. That turns what sounds like a small leak into a bigger repair.

The Ideal Logic 2 safety notice

There was also a safety notice involving some Ideal Logic 2 combi and system boilers.

This affected certain boilers manufactured between August 2022 and 7 January 2024. The issue involved a dry operation risk, where the boiler could continue burning gas without the heat being cooled correctly.

Ideal launched a safety upgrade programme for affected boilers.

This does not mean every Ideal Logic boiler is affected. It also does not mean every Ideal boiler is unsafe. The notice applied to specific models and manufacturing dates.

If you have an Ideal Logic 2 boiler fitted around that time, check the official Ideal safety page or GOV.UK recall notice using your boiler model and serial number.

If you rent your home, ask your landlord or housing provider to check this for you.

How important is servicing on an Ideal Logic boiler?

Servicing is very important.

A lot of boiler problems get worse when servicing is skipped or rushed. This is especially true if the heating system water is dirty or the boiler has never had a proper clean.

A proper annual service can help spot:

The Ideal Logic combi boiler can be a good option for:

  • Landlords who want a common, easy-to-source boiler
  • Homeowners who want good parts availability
  • People who want a sensible balance between cost and quality

It can be a practical choice when the installation is done properly.

Who might want to consider something else?

The Ideal Logic may not be the best choice if:

  • You want a more premium boiler
  • You have very high hot water demand
  • You want the longest warranty available on the market
  • Your heating system has ongoing pressure or water quality issues that have not been fixed
  • You want the quietest possible boiler
  • You have multiple bathrooms being used at the same time

In those cases, it is worth comparing other boilers before deciding.

Would I recommend an Ideal Logic combi boiler?

Yes, in the right situation.

The Ideal Logic is not my favourite boiler of all time. It has had issues, and some older models have known weak points.

But I would not write it off.

It is compact, common, easy enough to work on and parts are widely available. For many homes, especially where budget matters, it can be a sensible mid-range boiler.

The key point is this: the installation matters as much as the boiler.

A good boiler fitted badly can still cause problems. The system should be flushed where needed, protected with inhibitor, fitted with a filter, commissioned correctly and serviced every year.

Final thoughts

The Ideal Logic combi boiler has been around since 2009 for a reason. Millions have been fitted across the UK, and many are still working well.

It is not a perfect boiler. It has had faults, updates and criticism over the years. But it still holds a strong place in the UK boiler market.

If you already have an Ideal Logic boiler, look after it. Have it serviced properly every year. Keep the system water clean. Deal with pressure loss early. Do not ignore leaks, rumbling noises or fault codes.
